A Muddy Adventure
We had another action packed day! We started out with a 6-9 am game drive in Chobe National Park. The park is absolutely beautiful with lush, green trees but also wide open meadows along side the Chobe River. At this time of the day the lighting is magical. We saw so many impalas and we got to watch them frolicking and the babies nursing. They are so beautiful. In the pictures, they are the small antelope that have the black lines on their bums that look like an “M”. The Africans say that the M is the MacDonald’s sign for the lions!
Halfway through our safari the guides served us coffee and a snack. It is awesome how they set it all up on the front of the jeeps.
We also got to see some giraffes, wart hogs and lots of baboons. Chobe is known for it’s elephants, so we were intent on seeing elephants. We were headed to the edge of the park at the end of our safari and suddenly, here they came! A line of at least 15 elephants, big and small, came walking through the trees, walking with a mission. We stopped and they went right between our jeeps. We certainly ended that safari on a high note!
We headed back to the lodge for breakfast and a quick break before leaving again. At 11:00 we got on the boat and headed across the river to a whole new country, Namibia!! It was quite a process, as we had to go to Botswana customs to exit the country, then Namibia customs to enter the country and then reverse the process on the way back.
We went to Impalila Island in Namibia to visit one of the villages that are on the island. Just as we were arriving, big dark clouds were forming and it began to thunder and lightning. We had to walk about a kilometre to the village along the muddiest road you can imagine ( see pictures). It was very a slippery but everyone made it without falling. Our guide showed us around the village and explained their way of life. Towards the end of our tour the rain hit, so we got to walk back on that muddy road in the rain!! Fun!!!
We returned to the lodge and went straight to lunch , mud and all! After lunch we found garden hoses to wash our shoes and we all went to our rooms to shower. We had a bit of down time bore leaving at 4:00 on another river cruise. It was a spectacular evening as we cruised along, watching wildlife. The highlight was getting up close to a male elephant walking along the shore.
After our cruise we went for dinner. It was starting to feel like all we were doing was eating! We certainly aren’t going hungry on this tour!
Time for bed as we have another early morning tomorrow!
